Enclosed within the volute of the crozier, the angel Gabriel, holding a stylized lily, greets the Virgin Mary, who has risen from her high- backed chair.
This crozier is similar to a group of three others, one in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and two others excavated in Germany, one at Trier and the other at Bremen. These have all been dated to the second quarter of the 13th century, when the emphasis in Limoges work was on gilt appliqué figures complemented by restrained enamel decoration (see Enamels of Limoges: 1100-1350, exh. cat., New York, 1996, no. 111).
