These columns were supplied by the celebrated decorating firm of Jansen for a private home at 12, rue Murillo in Paris. They appear in a watercolor depicting its elegant drawing room appointed with Louis XV and XVI objects. Interestingly, two interiors by the same artist, T. Hunloke, depicting the 18th century style French interiors in the Deane Johnson residence in Bel Air, California were sold by Mr. and Mrs. Deane Johnson and the late Anne Ford Johnson, 'The Arts of France', Christie's, New York, 21 October 1997, lot 257.
The owners of 12, rue Murillo, a Marquis and his American-born wife who married in the 1950s, were at the forefront of fashionable society in Paris according to a friend's private remembrance. Over the next thirty years they acquired examples of 18th and 19th century antiques, both French and English, for their magnificent home situated on a private park. The Marquise spent her final years in Virginia following the death of her husband.
Maison Jansen, who supplied these columns, was founded by Henri Jansen in 1880. Dutch by birth, he established the decorating, furniture-making and antique-dealing firm first in Paris, and later expanding to a variety of cities around the world. The firm's glory days date back to the 1930s, when Stéphane Boudin directed the firm, and its style focused on traditional French designs, in the manner of tous les Louis. When Boudin retired in 1967, the imaginative Pierre
Delbée took over the firm. His creative genius is illustrated by the private collection assembled under his aegis and sold as a single owner sale,'Boulle to Jansen, An Important Private European Collection', Christie's, London, 11-12 June 2003. Jansen's esteemed patrons included the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Coco Chanel, and the Agnellis, to name but a few.
