Lot Essay
The characteristic flowerhead and trellis marquetry on this commode is almost certainly the work of Martin Carlin (maître in 1766), and several closely related examples exist bearing his stamp. Two other commodes stamped by Carlin and employing the same marquetry motif sold Sotheby's, New York, 13 October 1973, lot 153 and Sotheby's, Monaco, 13 February 1983, lot 504. Another commode with identical marquetry and legs was sold Christie's, Monaco, 5 December 1993, lot 207.
This commode can also be linked to the marchand-mercier Adrien Faizelot-Delorme (maître in 1748), who appears to have retailed the model. Executed in both the mosaic parquetry found here and also in versions mounted with coromandel lacquer panels, the design appears to have enjoyed considerable success. A related commode of this model with similar marquetry and identical frieze, leg and apron mounts stamped Delorme sold from the collection of Madame de Polès, sold Galerie
Georges Petit, 22-24 June, 1927, lot 295 (illustrated) and is again illustrated in G. Janneau, Les Commodes, Paris, 1977, p. XXXIIIB. Another commode stamped Delorme is currently in the Paris Trade, and a very similar commode with identical apron, frieze and collar mounts but mounted with coromandel lacquer panels is stamped by Delorme and the ébéniste Pierre-Henri Mewesen was sold from Longleat, Christie's London, 13 June 2002, lot 395.
