The rectangular panel with the dead bird suspended from a nail, indistinctly inscribed in pencil to the top 'grohe' and to the bottom 'Le Serin par Demontreuil 1791', in a later beaded and molded black-painted and parcel-gilt glazed frame
7½ in. (19 cm.) high, 6½ in. (16 cm.) wide, approximately the carving

Jean Demontreuil exhibited similar carvings at the Paris Salons in 1791, 1792 and 1793. A further carving by him was sold anonymously, Le Carpentier, Paris, 14 May - 1 June 1866, lot 181 as Un oiseau mort, suspendu par une patte. Tres-jolie sculpture en haut relief, par Demontreuil. Dans un cadre carr' en bois sculpt'., which sold for 250 livres.
