A large Raeren stoneware dated armorial jug
ATTRIBUTED TO JAN BALDEMS MENNICKEN, CIRCA 1598
Wappenkrug, the light brown-ground body decorated with a wide cylindrical frieze depicting elaborate foliage issuing from two-handled vases and surrounding the crested municipal coat-of-arms of Cologne flanked by two lion supporters, further with to the left those of the Elector of Cologne and to the right those of the city of Speyer, above a long banderole inscribed in Low German with Dit Is Ein Kunst Die Kumpt Aus Gottes Gunst: Wer Die Kunst Noch So Schon So Mossen Seit Sich Geffen Zu Den Dot...598, the terraced shoulders and narrowing lower part incised with stylised acanthus leaves, the neck with a frieze of Laub und Bandelwerk enclosing mascaroons, with strap handle 31cm high
