Surinam, an independent republic in South America, was a Dutch colony from 1616 till 1975. The Dutch West India Company was founded in 1621 in order to exploit the colonies in the Americas. Parts of the country were divided in large plantations using African slaves as a workforce. The former tobacco plantations were transformed into sugar cane plantations around 1650.
