Lot Essay

Deriving from the portrait by Michel Sittow in the National Museum of Copenhagen, Denmark. Christian II of Denmark was a typically bombastic Renaissance prince. At home he alienated the Danish nobility by his populist reforms and working class mistress; abroad he took Sweden by force but his attempt to hold onto it by massacring the Swedish nobility at Stockholm provoked the Swedes to unify behind the famous Vasa dynasty and expel him.
