Lot Essay

The sone of a furrier, Coeur became one of fifteenth century France's most notable and wealthy merchants and Bursar to Charles VII. His extraordinary career and vast fortune contributed to his demise when the French nobles conspired to have him executed. Amongst his alleged crimes were the poisoning of the King's mistress, Agnes Sorel. Having escaped to Rome, Pope Calixtus III gave him command of a flotilla to sail against the Turks, and it was on this expedition that he died in 1461.
