A VICTORIAN CARVED COAT OF ARMS FOR THE CITY OF MELBOURNE
These arms are based on the seal, engraved by Thomas Ham, that was presented to and formally adopted by the Council of the Town of Melbourne in 1843. The seal design was used as the arms of the Corporation up until 1940 when the current arm were first granted by Letters Patent of the Kings of Arms. Given the slight difference in the arms, this carving probably dates from the third quarter of the 19th century, 56 x 89 cm. (22 x 35 in.)
