Please note that Thomas Goode & Co., London are recorded at the Paris International Exhibition of 1878 and are highly commended for their display of Mintons pâte-sur-pâte, including vases of this form. The reviewers of the day in the The Illustrated Catalogue of the Paris International Exhibition 1878 note them as 'men whose judgment, knowledge and taste have given them foremost rank among purveyors of British porcelain...It is unnecessary to describe [their collection] they are of the highest Art grace and beauty, confer honour upon England, and justify us in entering into the competition with the best fabricants of all the nations of the world.' This Exhibition generated numerous commissions for Solon and Mintons. Also see Bernard Bumpus, Pâte-sur-Pâte, The Art of Ceramic Relief Decoration 1849-1992, Essex, 1992, p. for a photographic portrait of Solon at work on a vase of this form. Please see note to lot 118.
