Although none of the many of tapestries known as les Ténières can be linked to specific designs, archival documents of the very early 18th century already refer to them as such. The son of painter David Teniers the Elder (d.1685), Teniers became maître in the guild of Antwerp in 1633. Archduke Leopold Wilhelm elevated him to court painter in 1647, leading to worldwide commissions.
