A large Empire style ormolu, patinated bronze and griotte rouge marble mantel clock
After the model by Claude Michallon, Third quarter 19th Century
Modelled with figures of Cupid and Psyche leaning over the domed case with dial inscribed AugtMarchand/Rue Richelieu 59, with Roman numerals and twin-train movement stamped to the reverse T.N., above a central anthemion, flambeau, garland and lamp mount, the rectangular griotte rouge marble base applied with a further foliate mount and a butterfly, on marble plinth and winged lion-paw feet

Lot Essay

The tale of Cupid and Psyche was a popular theme in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Michallon was clearly inspired by Classical examples, such as the Capitoline Kiss, when he designed the graceful embrace atop the original model on which this clock is based.
