PROPERTY OF A EUROPEAN FAMILY (LOTS 40 - 69) The importance of the WITTGENSTEIN family to the promotion and sponsorship of the fine arts in Vienna at the beginning of the last century is well documented. The artistically-gifted Paul Wittgenstein (1842-1928), brother of the industrialist Karl (1847-1913), and uncle to the celebrated philospher Ludwig (1889-1951), was an enthusiastic and responsive patron of the Wiener Werkstätte. In 1906 he commissioned Josef Hoffmann to design an apartment, on Salesianergasse 7, Vienna, 1030, for his doctor son, Hermann (1879-1953) and his wife Lyda, née Fries, (1879-1964). The following twenty-nine lots were either commissioned or acquired by Herman and Lyda, and have since remained with the family, by descent. Lots 43, 45(part), 47, 54-55, 57-58, 66(part), 68 and 69 were exhibited, Der Preis der Schönheit. Zum 100. Geburtstag der Wiener Werkstätte, MAK, Vienna, 10 December 2003 - 7 March 2004.
