Lucienne Day has remained at the vanguard of British textile design since the the late 1940s. Awarded a Gold Medal at the IX Triennale for her textile design Calyx, a pattern originally designed for the 1951 Festival of Britain, Day began to produce silk mosaics in the late 1970s. The earlier examples illustrated an architectual approach, with all panels based on a 1cm. module. Day stitched the first examples herself, before designating the time-consuming task to her niece, Karin Conradi, for works subsequent to 1980. "Palace of Peking", numbers "1" and "2", were exhibited, and purchased by the vendor from, Day's first exhibition devoted to this medium at the Prescote Gallery, Cropredy, Oxfordshire, 1979.
