They were made of GRP (fibreglass) from individually sculpted moulds, with a removable rear skull section, also made of GRP and secured with a pair of magnets. This gave access to the 'Supermarionation' solenoid lip-sync mechanism and to the moving eye mechanism and to the rockers, where fitted. The heads and skull sections were marked inside with reference numbers. Lighter and more fragile reusable 're-vamp' heads were made for subsidiary characters, with a basic polystyrene plastic skull covered with sculpted plasticine.
