Mamoulian's stunning visual style, heavy lighting and the dark milieu of the underworld bore all the hallmarks of film noir, later seen in noir classics such as The Maltese Falcon, (1941) and The Glass Key, (1942). Peron's exceptionally stylish poster captures the atmosphere of the film.
