Lot Essay

Chairs of this elegant design were uniquely made in the village of Yealmpton in Devon. It was a technically difficult chair to make, since the back bow and arms had to be steamed and bent on two different planes at the same time. For this reason, perhaps, no other chair makers in Britain chose to adopt this design, although a number of makers in Connecticut and New York made a similar design in the late 18th century. Chairs of this type are now rare, and have often been repainted, as these chairs have, over their original blue/green paint.
