Further details
The unusual bowed top rail is a rare but consistent feature of some West Country Windsors, as is the exaggerated 'S' shaped curve of the high front arm supports. A Windsor chair of this design has been recorded with the brand I LOVEL below the seat. Although unrecorded, I. Lovel may be the maker of that chair, and a relative of Thomas Lovel, a cabinet maker of St Sidwell, Exeter, who is reported in the Exeter Flying Post of 18th Feb 1818 to have been convicted at Exeter of "Wilfully and maliciously cutting down several young trees from the hedge in a field in the parish" and ordered to pay compensation of £5.00.
