Lot Essay

Were it not for the date in the cartouche below, this carpet would normally be dated early in the nineteenth century. It has the features of a later variant on a seventeenth century "vase" design, but the construction is different. It has a number of instances of jufti knotting which would indicate a Khorassani origin. Of interest are the small vases from which some of the floral sprays spring, a feature which is also found on a lozenge lattice carpet published by Pope (A.U.: A Survey of Persian Art, Oxford, 1938, pl.1241).
