Lot Essay

This is an example of the most classic design to be attributed to the neighbourhood of Afyon in West Anatolia. One very similar example in the Victoria and Albert Museum was purchased in 1894 (Yanni Petsopoulos and Belkis Balpinar: 100 Kilims, exhibition catalogue, London, 1991, no.43). Another example was exhibited in Milan (John Eskenazi: Kilim, Milan, 1981, no.5, pp.24-5). A third was discovered in the Ulu Mosque in Afyon (B. Balpinar and U. Hirsch: Vakiflar Museum Istanbul, Flatweaves, Wesel, 1982, pl.76, pp.206-7). The group is discussed by Balpinar and Hirsch: "Parmakli Kilims", Hali, no.26, 1985, pp.12-17).
