Lot Essay

A very similar carpet with identical design to the field and border, but with the field colours reversed, is illustrated in Werner Grote Hasenbalg: Der Orientteppich, seine Geschichte und seine Kultur, Berlin, 1922, vol.III, pl.64. Writing at the beginning of the 20th century the author dated it to "around 1800" and attributed it to Sultanabad.
