Alice's Spooky Adventure produced early in 1924 soon after Disney's twenty-second birthday, is one of the last films ever to be animated by Disney personally, by May of that year Walt had given up drawing his own cartoons forever. It is also the last time on record that Walt's brother Roy Disney - the financial genius behind the Disney organization - served as cameraman.
In a blend of animation and live action, the early Alice comedies featured four year old Virginia Davis in the title role, a live actress in a cartoon world. The Alice Comedies were Disney's first successful film series and represent the true beginning of the Disney media empire. Alice's Spooky Adventure was the third film in the series.
The story begins when Alice, played by Virginia Davis, enters a spooky abandoned house to retrieve a baseball. When plaster falls on her head, she is knocked out and begins to dream of a city called Spookville, and attends a concert given by musical ghosts, who end up chasing the little girl. When she wakes up she is arrested by a policeman who throws her in jail.
This poster is the only known surviving copy and was in the personal collection of Alice star Virginia Davis for almost seventy years. It was photographed for reproduction in the reference books listed avove.
