Signed Iruka Sanetsugu, Muromachi Period (15th Century)
Blade hirazukuri, iori-mune, uchizori, forging pattern fine ko-itame with jinie on omote, itame in masame on ura, tempered edge hoso-suguha of nioi, shirake utsuri, gomabashi groove on both sides, tang ubu, two holes, double gilt copper habaki, nagasa 28.2cm., motohaba 2.1cm., in shirasaya with inscription by Hon'ami Jirosaburo in Edo Bunkyu 2nd February (1862)

Lot Essay

The Iruga group were named after Iruga So in Kii Province, and were of the Yamato Tegai School, working from the late Kamakura Period (circa 1300) onwards for some generations. They made mostly tanto with suguha, like this piece. There is a sayagaki by Hon'ami Jirozaburo stating that the blade was polished in Bunkyu 2nd year (1862).
