The first Tomoshige is thought to have been the son of Sanekage of Kaga Province working at the end of the 14th century, although there is said to have been an earlier smith of the name who studied under Rai Kunitoshi in the late Kamakura Period. There were several further generations working through much of the Muromachi Period.
