Lot Essay

A copy of illustrations of sword mountings as recorded in the Shuko Jisshu [Ten Types of Antiquities], with a preface by Matsudaira Sadanobu dated 1800. The sword section was published as a printed book, in three volumes with 98 pages. It is probable that the illustrations for Shuko Jisshu were taken from this scroll or, if it is a copy, from its original. The mountings illustrated are of famous old swords from shrine, temple, and other collections, including well-known pieces like Oni-maru and Kogarasu-maru. Among the illustrations some bear dates from the 1760's onwards and, like the original, cannot always be regarded as historically accurate.
