A VERY RARE UNDERGLAZE-BLUE AND COPPER-RED DECORATED 'DRAGON AND PHOENIX' VASE
QING DYNASTY, 18TH CENTURY
The vase of compressed globular shape with a wide cylindrical neck, flaring to the slightly everted mouth rim, superbly decorated in underglaze copper-red around the body with a phoenix, depicted in a downward swoop with its long tail feathers billowing above, its head turned towards a lively five-clawed dragon striding in pursuit, amidst flowering peonies in varying stages of growth, borne on leafy stems rendered in underglaze cobalt-blue, all above copper-red crested waves breaking against cobalt-blue rocks encircling the base, supported on a gently splayed foot ring decorated with stylised floral sprays
