QIANLONG PERIOD (1736-1795)

Each jardiniere is attractively carved through layers of red lacquer to the black lacquer ground with shaped cartouches enclosing figures of scholars and assistants variously travelling along a lakeside path shaded by pine and wutong trees, carrying with them baskets of flowers, lingzhi and peaches, surrounded by stylised lotus sprays and angular scrollwork at the canted corners, the flattened everted mouth rim with lotus scrolls and key-fret, all raised on bracket feet, the interior and base with black lacquer (losses, some infilled)
10 3/4 in. (27.3 cm.) wide (2)

Lot Essay

Jardinieres decorated with carved lacquer are very rare. Cf. a single jardiniere of quatrefoil section with similar scenes of travellers, in the National Palace Museum, Taiwan, included in the Illustrated Catalogue of Lacquerware in the National Palace Museum, Taiwan, 1981, pl. 61.
