A PAIR OF DOUCAI 'LOTUS POND' BOWLS
JIAQING SIX-CHARACTER SEALMARKS AND OF THE PERIOD (1796-1820)

Each bowl is decorated with two pairs of mandarin ducks swimming amidst four large lotus blooms and aquatic plants half submerged in water, above a blue-ground band of upright lotus lappets, the interior medallion with a similar scene of paired ducks and lotus, all within double-line borders

Lot Essay

The present bowls are somewhat larger in size than most Qianlong and Jiaqing bowls of this design which measure approximately 10.2 cm. across the mouth rim. Cf. a smaller Jiaqing bowl of this pattern, from the McElney Collection, included in the exhibition, Wonders of the Potter's Palette, Hong Kong Museum of Art, 1984, illustrated in the Catalogue, no. 91; and another included in the Hong Kong O. C. S. Exhibition of Ch'ing Polychrome Porcelain, 1977, illustrated in the Catalogue, no. 97.
