NELSON'S FINAL DAYS IN MERTON AND PORTSMOUTH
MERTON Under date London 13 Sept Lord Nelson and Sir Sidney Smith dine with Mr. Goldsmid at Merton this day previous to their setting out to assume their respective commands.
(Page 2 col. 4, in all 4 cm.) in a complete issue of THE EDINBURGH EVENING COURANT dated Monday 16 September 1805; PORTSMOUTH At a quarter before six o'clock on Saturday morning Lord Nelson arrived at the George Inn Portsmouth, Capt. Maurice who defended the Diamond Rock, met his Lordship in the dock yard, who received him in the most gracious manner. Nelson said he was very sorry that he did not arrive in the West Indies time enough to save the rock; but that there was not a man in the Country who was more impressed with the gallantry displayed by him (Capt. Maurice) in the defence of the place, than he was.. Capt. Maurice now commands the Savage sloop at Portsmouth. Crowds of people, mention of lots of names and finally yesterday the Victory sailed with the Euryalus frigate list of ships to follow.
