engraved by the flared eye-cup with dust slide with maker and inscription: Presented by Her Majesty's Government to Captain John Glass, Master of the Brig 'Dante' of Greenock in acknowledgement of his humanity and kindness to the Master, Crew and Passengers of the Ship 'Levanter' of St. Johns N.B. whom he rescued from their sinking Vessel on the 5th December 1862, tapering leather-covered tube, dust cap to main lens -- 26½/32½in. (67/82.5cm.) closed/open, contained within a fitted mahogany case -- 27¾in. (70.5cm.); together with two sail-cloth covered volumes of Nories Navigation for 1877, each signed by Capt. Glass
