Built by Cammell, Laird & Co in 1935, the City of Manchester displaced 8,917 tons gross, measured 485 feet in length and had a breadth of 64 feet, which, propelled by two sets of Parsons turbines, gave her a service speed of 15 knots. Her eleven insulated chambers were capable of maintaining temperatures for frozen and chilled cargo in outside temperatures of over 90° Fahrenheit. Her life was short lived however: Attacked by Japanese submarine I-53 on 28th February 1942, three men were killed as the ship sank, six captured by the Japanese, with the remaining 128 crew making it to safety.
