Lot Essay

The three-masted ship Blenheim in this work is probably the vessel built on the Thames in 1790 and owned by Fryer & Co. of London. Measured at 364 tons, she is recorded as a West Indian trader voyaging regularly to Jamaica. This identification has been made on the basis of another version of the painting (incorrectly captioned H.M.S. Blenheim but dated 1793) which is held in the National Collection at Greenwich, for an illustration of which see the Concise Catalogue of Oil Paintings in the National Maritime Museum, 1988, p.437, BHC 3236c.
