Lot Essay

This group of Sakyamuni figures seated in similar posture appeared to be a popular iconography from the Yuan dynasty. Compare to two Yuan dynasty examples: the first of carved wood in the Detroit Institute of Art, illustrated in Hai-wai Yi-chen, Chinese Art in Overseas Collections: Buddhist Sculpture, Taibei, 1990, p. 171, no. 158; and the other, a large gilt bronze (44.1 cm.) in the Cleveland Museum of Art, ibid., p. 172, no. 159. Compare also a lacquer wood figure, sold at Christie's London, 11 June 1990, lot 110.
