LIAO DYNASTY (907-1125)
Cast seated in dhyanasana on a waisted three-tiered lotus base, the right hand held in vitarka mudra, the left hand holding a jewel, the hair bound up in an openwork topknot, wearing a tiara containing a flaming pearl, the loose robes open at the chest to expose a necklace with three pendants, the face with a serene expression with characteristic boldly-cut eyes and narrow mouth, the gilding with a rich orange-gold appearance

Lot Essay

Another similar gilt-bronze Maitreya Bodhisattva with a stupa in the crown, from the Liao period, was exhibited in Buddhism Art and Faith at the British Museum, illustrated by W. Zwalf (ed.), catalogue, p. 204, fig. 294, where the author compared the Maitreya with comparable seated clay Bodhisattvas within the Bojiajiao library hall, constructed in 1038 at the Lower Huayan temple, Datong, Shanxi province.
