Lot Essay

This painting was painted between 1847 and 1856; 1847 being the year when the church in this view was erected and 1856 the year it burnt down. See Carl L. Crossman, The Decorative Arts of The China Trade, Woodbridge, Suffolk, 1991, p. 434, figs. 22 and 23 for two similar views of this period.
