Lot Essay
This service was inspired by a Meissen pattern of circa 1757, but the inspiration of the central design is unknown. A very large part of this service was owned by Major General Sir George Burns, and was sold at his home, North Mymms Park, Christie's, 24 September 1979, lots 743-801. He may well have inherited the service from his great-uncle, Mr. J. Pierpont Morgan. Each grisaille 'shield' and motto in the service is different, and several of the mottos are mis-spelt. A strainer and dish from this service is in the Hodroff Collection, and is illustrated by D. S. Howard, The Choice of the Private Trader, London, 1994, no. 139, pp. 132 and 133.
