Supported on a low circular spreading foot, and with a pair of applied lion-mask and loose-ring handles over a single flange at the shoulders, decorated with a formal design of six lotus flowerheads enclosed by curled leafy branches, reserved on a blue ground, below a continuous band of chrysanthemum flowerheads around the waisted neck, originally fitted with different handles and base

Lot Essay

The censer has been constructed by 'recycling' parts of various pieces of different date and fitted together. The neck, for example, has 16th century features, while the base, probably the lower part of a tripod censer at some point because of the drilled holes where the legs once attached, is from the 18th century.
