Antoine Salomon has confirmed the authenticity of this drawing. This drawing is a preliminary study for one of Vuillard's most sumptuous portraits of the mid-1890s, La Femme au faulteuil, 1896 (Salomon and Cogeval, no. VI-34). The sitter is Misia Natanson, née Godebksa, the Polish-born wife of Thadée Natanson, who, with his brothers Alfred and Alexandre published the influential, La Revue Blanche in Paris from 1891 to 1903. She was an accomplished pianist, and her salon was a popular meeting place for the leading artists and writers of the Belle Epoque. Vuillard idolized her as his "Muse."
