In 1793, Chinnery moved to Sackville Street, off Piccadilly, where he lived for two years.
The sitter was the daughter of the 12th Earl of Derby. Shortly after this portrait was drawn, Lady Elizabeth Stanley married Stephen Thomas Cole of Twickenham and Stoke Lyne. A dedication on the backboard to a Mrs Cole and the date 9 November 1794 suggests that this may have been an engagement present to the sitter's prospective mother-in-law.
