Spencer's first one-man exhibition was held at the Goupil Gallery in January 1923, the year after his mother had died. He went on to exhibit there through the 1920s, sometimes with other Slade school alumnae such as Mark Gertler, on other occasions with John Nash and sometimes in one-man shows. His final exhibition at Goupil in February 1932 marked the closure of the Gallery.

J.L. Behrend, a previous owner of the present picture, was an important patron for Gilbert Spencer, owning pictures including Football on Cookham Moor, 1930-31 (private collection). He was also a highly important patron to Gilbert's painter brother, Sir Stanley Spencer, R.A. (1891-1959) buying early important pictures direct from the artist such as Mending Cowls, Cookham, 1915, (Tate, London) and Swan Upping, Cookham, 1915-19 (Tate, London) as well as commissioning him to decorate the Sandham Memorial Chapel, Burghclere, Berkshire (National Trust).
