Lot Essay

Sickert spent each summer in Dieppe from 1885 until he went to live there permanently in the autumn of 1898. This informal sketch was probably painted during the latter half of the 1880s when café scenes, both indoors and out, feature in many of his drawings, etchings and paintings. The subject matter was perhaps inspired by the example of Degas, but the fluent handling, understated definition and muted tones owe a debt to Whistler.
