Lot Essay
The mills and factories of Swinton and Pendlebury were a continual source of fascination for Lowry. He lived amongst this industrial landscape for over forty years, and while he often commented that he had no choice in his subject matter: 'I did the paintings of factories and industrial workers because I lived on the spot. There was nothing much else for me to paint' (see J. Sandling and M. Leber, Lowry's City A Painter and his Locale, Salford, 2000, p. 17).
