Lot Essay

Lowry attended the football matches of the Bolton Wanderers, but for his art he was interested only in the crowds going to or leaving these matches.

The subject of this painting, Lowry explained to the owner, is almost certainly a Rochdale Hornets rugby match. But in this painting, as in those Lowry depicted of football, the game is incidental. The stand which forms part of a monochrome background and the two goal posts which stick up behind the dividing wall are the only indications of what has taken place. Lowry is only interested in the crowd which is leaving the game.
Lowry's ability to create movement and solidity in his people with individual brush strokes is apparent not only in the foreground figures but also in those at the back where definition is minimal. By including figures which disappear at the edge of the painting, Lowry gives the impression of a crowd continuing beyond the picture plane.
