Only few examples of Yunnan moulded lacquerware are known. For a similar technique (red-coloured lacquer motifs moulded, impressed and applied on a thick earthenware coat) see a vase on D. Clifford, Chinese Carved Lacquer, Bamboo Publishing, London 1992, p.113, ill.88
The datation of these moulded lacquer Yunnan pieces has been discussed (see D. Clifford or Sir H. Garner). This group is said to be dated either from the 16th/17th centuries or the late 19th/early 20th centuries. If no evidence has been advanced, the current piece shows great similarities (especially the treatment of the peonies, the rocks and of the characters) with some 16th/17th century chinese carved lacquerware.
For further discussion on Yunnan lacquerware see D. Clifford, Chinese Carved Lacquer, Bamboo Publishing, London 1992, pp.107-113
