Lot Essay

Osler: "Many general practitioners in small places have become successful naturalists; but it is hard to parallel the career of Jonathan Couch. In a far-away, isolated fishing village he made himself one of the first authorities on British fishes; and this work, all - text and plates - from his own hand, amid the scanty leisure of a laborious practice, is a monument to his industry and perseverence."
