Lot Essay

The backed Ps with the Prince of Wales's feathers was used by Phillips Brothers, London (Phillips Bros & Son from 1869 when Robert's son Alfred joined the firm) from the 1860's. The mark was probably used after Robert's death in 1881, until 1884 when Alfred took over the firm and registered his own maker's mark, AP (used until 1902).
