TWO ENGLISH HANGERS
Late 17th Century
The first with curved, single-edge, sharply-pointed, double-fullered blade (some rust-pitting), each face of the forte stamped 'ANNO 1555', the brass hilt comprising slightly downturned shell with undulating edge, slender knuckle-guard, and bonnet-shaped pommel, all cast in relief with figures, masks, fleurs-de-lys and leaf motifs (all rubbed), and natural staghorn grip; the second similar, the plain blade back-edged towards the point, and the oval shell linked to the knuckle-guard by a front bar, the relief decoration comprises, on the shell the lion and unicorn supporters of the English royal arms surmounted by a royal crown and flanked by standing figuers, on the knuckle-guard royal crowns, and on the pommel masks and foliage

The hilts of these swords belong to a well known English group of which versions are found also on cavalry swords and small-swords. They are mostly made of brass, but a few silver versions are known

The blade fitted to the first sword has every appearance of being a 17th century one. the significance of the date 1555 is uncertain
