Lot Essay

This sculpture depicts Mme Renoir nursing her first child Pierre. Executed by Richard Guino under the direction of Renoir, Maternité was intended as a study for a large statue which was to be placed on Mme Renoir's tomb at Essoyes. The larger version was never realized.
