Property from the Estate of Maria-Gaetana Matisse, Sold for the Benefit of The Metropolitan Museum of Art
Maria-Gaetana (Tana) von Spreti was born in Vienna on 11 January 1943. In 1967, after studying languages in Munich she moved to London starting her involvement in the arts by working for the legendary Heinz Berggruen. Around 1970 she moved to New York and worked for the Antique Porcelain Company as well as Marlborough Gallery. It was Frank Perls who introduced her to Pierre Matisse, son of artist HenriMatisse, and the pre-eminent dealer of modern European art in New York. She worked at the Pierre Matisse Gallery from 1972, and married Pierre in 1974. After Pierre's death in 1989, and the closing of the gallery, she and his heir established the Pierre Matisse Foundation with the objective of archiving the records of over fifty years of gallery activities. The Archives were eventually donated to the Pierpont Morgan Library and made accessible to scholars and researchers.
After the dissolution in 1999 of the Pierre Matisse Foundation, Tana Matisse established the Pierre and Maria-Gaetana Matisse Foundation, a charitable, not-for-profit organization, which she directed until her death. The Foundation recently made a gift to the Metropolitan Museum of Art of more than one hundred works from her collection.
