Lot Essay

The antiquarian chair has a two-tiered back relating to rustic Windsor chairs as featured in Arthur Devis's 1740s portrait of Lascelles Raymond Iremonger, and discussed in N. G. Evans' chapter 'The English Windsor' in American Windsor Chairs, New York, 1996 (pp. 50-57 and figs. 1-25). A related Rhode Island 'Roundabout' chair is illustrated in H. Sack and D. Levison, 'American roundabout chairs', Antiques, May 1991 (p. 83).
